The SAARC region is one of the largest geo-economic blocks of the world with population of over 1.2 billion people. The region has achieved a record average economic growth of 7% and has a customer base of over 425 million people in the middle income groups. However, for a region that aspires to be an economic union, it has one of the lowest levels of intra-regional trade. With Indian Government giving its nod to South Asia Free Trade Agreement (safta), if utilized in its true spirit, SAFTA can act as catalyst in multiplying intra-regional investment together with technological co-operation, tourism promotion and greater people to people contact.
